Fernie is a wild west kinda town, but actually is an old coal mining town. The coal industry has just had a revival and the long term coal contracts just signed are for record high prices. Met a guy with an RV repair business for sale which he was running single handed – all of his employees left at the same time to go to work for Caterpillar, on much better wages than he could afford to pay.
Each time we travelled from the town to the ski hill we picked up hitch hikers and none of them were Canadians. It seems everyone there is a Brit a Kiwi or an Ozzie.
I asked in the video shop if they had any second hand DVDs for sale and they said have a look at any of the rental ones and they’d see what it was worth. We bought ‘Snow Dogs’ which was filmed near here but is actually set in Alaska, about a dentist from Florida who inherits a pack of sled huskies – $12.
We went for a meal with Ray and Amy and the waitress forgot to order my main course. We didnt bother re-ordering and still had the best meal so far in Canada and still had too much to eat!
