Mixing with the Oi Poloi

Last night we were bussed from the fire hall near where we live, to an old resort about 6km further around the edge of the basin. It is called the Grouse Nest and is a little rundown, but in its heyday in the 1950’s it was the place for swingers and socialites to hang out. The current owners are architects and they invited the neighbourhood to come and see what plans they have for the property, as some people think it is controversial and are against any development in this rural area.

200 people or so turned up, and we were just about the youngest there, for a bbq and soft drinks, and we had a look around. the most astonishing thing was the louche bar area which was still magnificent. There was gold leaf on the ceiling, and the bar was 20 foot long swirly shaped, covered in real seal skin fur, and topped with inch thick malachite. When booze was hard to come by in years gone by the rich and famous came here to party. We rubbed shoulders with the local bigwigs for a while and met some interesting people. This was the first time we have been out wthout the children as Wendys Dad, Derek, babysat.
